Education of primary, secondary and high school students is also part of the “Open Depository” project. Its content will be focused mainly on the critical moments in modern history – from the interwar period to the Second World War – and will simultaneously respond to the needs of the current issues, such as extremism, racism and intolerance in society nowadays.

Students will have the opportunity to work with replicas of collection items and uniforms, with authentic archive material and various everyday objects used during the Second World War, which will, naturally, increase the appeal of such untraditional form of education. Students will attend lectures at the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising and its Education Centre, where thematic and experiential education will take place, on a regular basis during the academic year. They will move from their school desks to the authentic environment of a museum, an open collection storage area as well as the main exhibition, and will acquire knowledge not only of the “Open depository” project, but also of the museum itself, its collections, mission and place in society. Through the educational activities created, students’ critical thinking will be reinforced, they will learn how to fight disinformation and how to navigate themselves in the world of global facts and, primarily, information about our national history. Experiential learning about important and current issues will help young people understand how far conflicts in society can escalate.

Within the educational part of the “Open Depository” project, the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising cooperates mainly with schools in the region. Memoranda of Cooperation were signed with three primary schools (Základná škola Spojová in Banská Bystrica, Základná škola Slobodného slovenského vysielača in Banská Bystrica and Základná škola Hrnčiarska in Zvolen) and three secondary schools (Gymnázium Jozefa Gregora Tajovského in Banská Bystrica, Evanjelické gymnázium in Banská Bystrica and Gymnázium Andreja Sládkoviča in Banská Bystrica).
